Assembly

Part and assembly requirements coordinated through one engineering team.

Send your assembly drawing, bill of materials and acceptance criteria. We will confirm the manufacturing, finishing and assembly scope for your program before quoting.

What assembly work covers

Assembly is the stage where individually good parts either become a working unit, or expose a tolerance or handling problem that no drawing review caught. The right process depends on the joint design, the volume, and how the finished unit is tested, so scope is agreed per programme before anything is quoted.

Work in this category typically includes:

Design considerations that decide whether assembly is repeatable

Most assembly problems are visible at the drawing stage. Three causes account for the majority of them.

Tolerance stack-up. Every part can be inside its own tolerance and the assembly still fail, because the errors add along the datum chain. Where a clearance or an alignment depends on three or more parts, the stack has to be calculated rather than assumed. The tolerance stack-up article sets out the method.

Interference fits and material strength. A press fit is a controlled overload of both parts. The interference has to suit the weaker material, and it has to allow for the fact that a plated or anodized surface changes the diameter after machining.

Joining method against service environment. Bonded joints behave differently in peel and in shear. Threaded joints work loose under vibration unless they are locked. Mixed metals in contact need the galvanic pair checked before a finish is chosen, not after.

Prototype, pilot and production

The same assembly can be built three different ways, and a quotation should state which one it assumes. At prototype volume, assembly is usually bench work against a written sequence, with dimensional checks on the joints that matter. As volume rises, the value shifts to fixtures, to features that make an incorrect orientation physically impossible, and to gauges that check the joint rather than the operator's judgement. First-article approval and the inspection record are agreed before the first production batch.

What to send for an assembly quotation

Send the package through the RFQ form and an engineer will confirm the manufacturing, finishing and assembly scope in writing before anything is quoted. Where a step is carried out by a specialised supplier, that is stated in the same document rather than presented as in-house work.
