A thicker, denser version of the same anodizing process as Type II, run at lower temperature and higher current density to build a much harder, more abrasion-resistant oxide layer.
Same electrochemical principle as Type II — oxide layer grown from the aluminum itself — but the process conditions are tuned to produce a thicker, denser coating built for wear resistance rather than primarily color and appearance.
Used on parts that see real mechanical wear — gears, pistons, sliding mechanical components, tooling — rather than purely cosmetic aluminum parts.
