How it works

Hobbing cuts gear teeth into a rotating cylindrical blank using a specialized cutting tool called a hob, removing material in a series of progressive passes to form the tooth profile — spur gears, worm gears, bevel gears, splines. It's a volume-friendly process: economical for prototypes, but really built for production runs. Internal gear features aren't possible with hobbing — that's EDM's job instead.
